Emergency Measures Activated as Forest Fire Threatens Cádiz Coast
A new fire is ravaging the coast of Cádiz, prompting a swift response from the Infoca Plan, the fire prevention and extinguishing unit from the Junta of Andalucía. Preventive evacuations are underway for homes and vehicles in the Atlanterra beach area due to the perilous spread of flames from the forest fire declared in Tarifa, Cádiz.
According to Infoca sources, the fire has been situated in the Sierra de la Plata region, near the Cueva del Moro zone. The situation has escalated with strong easterly winds reaching up to 50 kilometers per hour, raising alarms for tourist urbanizations in the vicinity. In response, the Junta of Andalucía has activated its emergency fire plan promptly.
As of midafternoon, a comprehensive effort is underway, with Infoca deploying a total of 14 air resources that include three medium helicopters, two heavy helicopters, one light helicopter, two light amphibious planes, one heavy plane, four ground fire support planes, and one coordination aircraft. Alongside aerial support, four forest fire reinforcement brigades, eight groups of forest firefighters, four operations technicians, four environmental agents, and the Regional Command Group are actively participating in controlling the fire.
Antonio Sanz, the Minister of the Presidency of the Junta of Andalucía, has joined the firefighting efforts and provided updates to the media. José Antonio Santos, the mayor of Tarifa, has noted that while the winds have eased slightly, the fire is still progressing and poses a significant threat because of its location in a densely wooded area, which is where the fiercest flames are observed.
The Provincial Firefighters Consortium of Cádiz has also mobilized resources, dispatching personnel from the Tarifa and Algeciras fire stations, which are working with a heavy rural fire truck and a water tender vehicle to assist in the firefighting operations.
Many tourists present at nearby beaches have taken to social media to share images of the approaching flames and smoke, highlighting the immediate danger faced by urbanizations near Atlanterra beach in the town of Zahara de los Atunes.
