Empowering Communities: How the Postcode Lottery is Transforming Norrköping's Youth

In Norrköping, Sweden, a groundbreaking initiative funded by the Postcode Lottery is reshaping the lives of young people in disadvantaged neighborhoods. Launched by the City Missions and Keep Sweden Tidy, the project, known as Trygga Orten (Safe Place), aims to not only reduce littering but also foster a sense of community and empowerment among the youth.

One of the remarkable outcomes of Trygga Orten is its ability to decrease litter significantly—up to 58% in some areas—by utilizing innovative strategies such as the introduction of cigarette waste containers and behavior-modifying initiatives. These efforts are part of a broader mission to create a cleaner, more engaged community.

However, the project's impact extends far beyond environmental concerns. Trygga Orten encompasses educational support and leadership programs that provide a conducive learning environment for young individuals. This initiative offers quiet spaces for study and fosters valuable interactions with trusted adults. Hanan Ahmed's story exemplifies the profound effects of this program. Initially hesitant, she first attended the study help at the age of seventeen, where she found more than just academic assistance; she discovered a genuine support system.

"The sandwiches were good at study help and the staff were nice. But when they suggested I come back, I thought, that would never happen since I had too much else to do," recalls Hanan. Yet, just two weeks later, she returned and realized that Trygga Orten was a sanctuary for her personal growth.

"Here at Trygga Orten, I have met adults I can finally trust. They genuinely care about us and want what's best for us," Hanan reflects, noting the stark contrast between her life before and after joining the program. "Before I came here, I was the invisible girl—someone who would go home and not care about anything else. Now, I smile genuinely, and I've discovered new sides of myself."

Empowered by her experience, Hanan hopes to inspire others who may shy away from seeking help. "Trygga Orten has opened new sides of me, like having patience, and I want others to experience that too," she shares.

The Trygga Orten initiative has garnered support from various local stakeholders, illustrating the power of collective effort in addressing social challenges. Project manager Martin Callmeryd emphasized the importance of community collaboration. "We see how more players want to be part of supporting their local community through Trygga Orten's work. It's a testament that we are making a real difference in the lives of those in disadvantaged areas."

The Postcode Lottery plays a vital role in this initiative, having awarded 242 million kronor to the project as part of its Dream Projects program in 2022. Every year, the Lottery distributes a billion-surplus fund to support 61 nonprofit organizations, providing essential financial aid for innovative projects aimed at communal betterment.

Trygga Orten is a prime example of how targeted investments can lead to significant social and environmental progress. As this project aims to spread nationwide, it serves as an inspiring model for other communities seeking meaningful change. With the support of organizations like the City Mission and Keep Sweden Tidy, the potential for creating positive transformation in the lives of young individuals in Norrköping and beyond is substantial.
