Escalating Conflict: Iran Promises Retribution Following Supreme Leader's Death
In a dramatic escalation of hostilities, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Sunday its intention to strike back at 27 US military bases throughout the Middle East, as well as key Israeli targets, in response to the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This declaration of vengeance follows aggressive military actions against the Islamic Republic carried out by the United States and Israel.
According to a post shared on X by Tasnim, an Iranian news agency associated with the IRGC, the strikes were not limited to American installations but also included military positions in Israel, particularly those located in Tel Aviv. The severity of the threats has drawn immediate reactions, with the Israeli Army reporting a new wave of missile fire aimed at its territory. Citizens have been advised to seek safety as hostilities intensify, even as details about the attacks remain scant.
Amid the rising tensions, Al Jazeera reported hearing at least 11 explosions in Doha around 7:40 local time (04:40 GMT). Residents in the Qatari capital confirmed the incidents, although further information about their causes remains undisclosed. In a defensive response, Qatar's Ministry of Defense stated that it had successfully intercepted up to 18 ballistic missiles that targeted various parts of the country.
The situation has further escalated, with alert sirens sounding in Kuwait and reports of explosions in Dubai, indicating a widespread sense of emergency across the region. In a bold statement, the President of the Iranian Parliament declared, "We will take revenge on the Americans and Israelis. They have crossed our red line. We will deal them such terrible blows that they will plead for mercy," as quoted by the IRNA agency.
Iran has confirmed the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, asserting that it will exact a harsh and decisive punishment through what it calls the largest military operation in its history against both US and Israeli targets. In retaliation, both the US and Israel have vowed to continue their military operations against Iran, reflecting a rapid and dangerous cycle of escalation between these nations.
The conflict's intensity is evident as Iran has reportedly launched attacks on allied nations of the US, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait, which host American military bases. The violence was ignited by a joint offensive from the US and Israel early Saturday, targeting Tehran and other vital Iranian cities such as Tabriz and Isfahan. The conflict has already taken a dire toll, with estimates from the Iranian Red Crescent indicating that over 200 fatalities have resulted from the recent violence.
As the situation unfolds, the international community watches with apprehension, apprehensive of a broader conflict that could have sweeping implications across the Middle East and beyond.
