Escalating Conflict: Israel Orders New Evacuations in Jabalia Amid Ongoing Military Operations
Israel has initiated a new wave of evacuations from the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip, coinciding with intensified military ground operations and a series of bombings that took place overnight from Saturday to Sunday. Jabalia is recognized as the largest refugee camp in Gaza, which has suffered extensive destruction due to Israeli attacks in recent months. The Israeli army asserts that it has targeted multiple sites associated with Hamas, claiming that these locations included weapons depots, tunnels, and buildings used by militants allegedly seeking to rearm in the area.
Despite the name, Palestinian refugee camps like Jabalia do not consist of tents and shacks; instead, they resemble urban centers with roads and buildings, though often in a state of disrepair and lacking essential infrastructure. Originally established decades ago as temporary solutions for displaced Palestinians, these camps have evolved into permanent settlements over time. Before the escalation of violence, Jabalia was home to more than 100,000 residents. However, many of those who had previously fled and returned are now being forced to evacuate yet again due to the ongoing conflict.
This latest operation marks the fourth significant attack on Jabalia since the onset of Israel's military actions in the Gaza Strip, which began following the Hamas attacks on Israeli territory on October 7, 2023. Recent reports confirm that the Israeli army conducted aerial strikes in the area during the night, with ground troops also engaged in operations around the Rafah region and the so-called Philadelphi corridor near Egypt's border, effectively surrounding the city.
Scenes shared on social media depict Israeli tanks advancing toward the refugee camp, showcasing the damage inflicted by the bombings. Al Jazeera journalist Moath al-Kahlout, who is on the ground, reported that the overnight attacks resulted in the death of an entire family and caused injuries to women and journalists in the vicinity.
In conjunction with the Jabalia operation, the Israeli army has issued evacuation orders to the rest of northern Gaza, arguing that it has expanded areas deemed safe in the southern territory, where a significant portion of the Palestinian civilian population has congregated. The evacuation orders are expected to impact between 150,000 and 250,000 people, further complicating the humanitarian situation in the region. However, the Israeli military has encountered challenges in maintaining the security of areas previously marked as safe, having conducted several attacks even in these designated zones.
Additionally, reports indicate that during the night, the Israeli military launched an airstrike against a school and a mosque in Deir al-Balah, which were being used as shelters by hundreds of displaced Palestinian civilians. According to local authorities, these attacks resulted in the tragic deaths of at least twenty individuals, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza. This escalation underscores the profound complexities and tragic consequences of the ongoing conflict in the region.
