Escalating Conflict: Israeli Airstrikes Intensify in Beirut and Gaza Amid Ongoing Violence
In recent hours, the Israeli air force has launched one of its most aggressive operations over the Lebanese capital, Beirut, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict that has spread to Lebanon's borders. In the early hours of Sunday, over thirty bombings targeted various locations in the Dahye suburbs—an area that has endured its most violent night in the year-long conflict, as reported by the Lebanese National News Agency (ANN).
The southern suburbs, particularly Dahye, have faced relentless airstrikes, echoing a somber reminder of the escalating violence. At least five distinct residential neighborhoods were affected alongside a gas station along the route connecting the capital to Rafic Hariri International Airport, the only operational airport in the country that has seen limited flights in recent weeks.
The Israeli military confirmed the nighttime bombardments, asserting that they aimed to strike at ammunition depots and other infrastructure associated with terrorist activities. However, local reports reveal that at least 24 individuals were killed and 90 others injured in Gaza following a wave of bombings categorized by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as surgical strikes. Conversely, officials from the Gazan government labeled these assaults as two brutal massacres, highlighting the growing humanitarian crisis in the region.
Throughout the past week, the Israeli air force has continuously targeted Dahye, a stronghold for the Lebanese Shiite group, Hezbollah. For much of the conflict that began in October 2023, this area had been relatively insulated from such violence. Yet a significant shift occurred with Israel's intensified attacks, which began in mid-September and included strikes that reportedly killed key Hezbollah figures, including Secretary-General Hasan Nasrallah just a week ago.
Ground battles are also intensifying along the Lebanon-Israel border, with Israeli forces acknowledging the deaths of nine soldiers in ongoing clashes. The increased ground engagement correlates with continuous bombings in southern and eastern Lebanon, known strongholds of Hezbollah, indicating a strategic shift in Israel's military approach within the conflict.
