Escalating Tensions: Thailand and Cambodia Ignore Ceasefire Agreement

Despite an announcement of a ceasefire by US President Donald Trump, fighting between Thailand and Cambodia has escalated. The Thai armed forces continued their attacks, deploying fighter jets over the disputed border, as reported by the Cambodian Ministry of Information on Saturday. The Thai military has accused Cambodia of repeated international rule violations, complicating the situation further. On Friday, following discussions with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Trump stated that both nations had agreed to cease all hostilities starting that day. However, subsequent statements from Anutin and Hun did not mention any agreement, leading to confusion and skepticism regarding the effectiveness of such a ceasefire. Amid rising tensions with Cambodia, Thailand's newly appointed government, which has been in office for just a few months, now faces a severe political crisis with the dissolution of the House of Representatives. New elections are set to occur within the next 60 days, placing additional pressure on the leadership. Thai Prime Minister Anutin emphasized on Facebook that there is no ceasefire and vowed that military actions would continue until the nation no longer feels threatened. His statement signals a firm stance against perceived dangers from Cambodia, contradicting the notion of an agreed-upon halt to hostilities. In response, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet referenced his conversation with Trump on Facebook Saturday, affirming that Cambodia remains committed to seeking a peaceful resolution based on a previous agreement made in October in Kuala Lumpur. Nevertheless, as of Monday, fighting between the two nations had resumed, with rockets and artillery fired at multiple locations along their 817-kilometer border. These clashes are some of the heaviest since July when Trump intervened with calls for peace. The situation has deteriorated further with Thailand suspending the previous ceasefire agreement last month, fueled by accusations against Cambodia for laying new landmines that allegedly injured a Thai soldier. The Cambodian government has denied these accusations, intensifying the already fraught relations between the two nations. As the conflict continues, the prospect of a peaceful resolution remains uncertain. With military actions persisting and political instabilities simmering, both Thailand and Cambodia could face dire consequences if a diplomatic solution is not reached.
