Escalating Violence in Gaza: A Humanitarian Crisis Unfolds
At least 70 Palestinians have died in airstrikes carried out by the Israeli military across various locations in the Gaza Strip, marking the second day of bombardments that violate the ceasefire agreed upon in January. According to the Gaza Civil Defense, this has resulted in over 430 casualties in total. The specific locations affected by the strikes have not been detailed. Earlier, authorities in the Gaza Strip, controlled by the Hamas resistance movement, reported the deaths of at least 24 individuals in the northern region due to attacks conducted by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). One of the airstrikes targeted a home in Beit Lahia, injuring at least 40 others.
The escalation began on Tuesday when the Israeli military resumed bombings in Gaza, leading to nearly 500 fatalities including more than 180 children, alongside hundreds of injuries. This breach of the ceasefire, effective since January 19, has sparked a wave of international condemnation. Israeli troops have commenced a ground offensive, splitting the Gaza Strip in half once again.
The Ministry of Health in Gaza has warned that the renewed attacks are steering the region towards a health catastrophe, with over 80% of hospitals and clinics non-operational. This warning extends to the West Bank, which is also facing incursions from the IDF. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), highlighted that the resurgence of attacks threatens millions of lives, demanding an immediate restoration of the ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and the protection of humanitarian workers and civilians. One incident involved the death of a staff member from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) during an attack on a facility in Deir al-Balah, an event that Tel Aviv has distanced itself from.
Dr. Tedros extended condolences to UNOPS for the loss and emphasized that such casualties, including those of children, occurred on a day marked by the highest number of child fatalities in the past year in Gaza. Jorge Moreira da Silva, Executive Director of UNOPS, confirmed that the deceased was a member of their team, with five others seriously wounded. The Israeli government stated that an investigation is underway regarding this death, asserting that initial inquiries found no links to Israeli military activities.
Tom Fletcher, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, condemned the killing and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the attack on humanitarian workers, underlining that such personnel should not be targeted under international law. He expressed that the recent violence has reversed the advancements made during the ceasefire for the survivors, reiterating calls for lifting the blockade on aid, releasing hostages, protecting civilians, and restoring hostilities cessation agreements.
In response to these atrocities, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the Israeli government for committing war crimes as part of state-organized terrorism. The ministry underscored the significance of UNRWA, suggesting that attacks on its operations are part of the genocide targeting Palestinians and represent severe violations of international law. They called for the international community to pressure Israel to halt its exterminative actions against the Palestinian people and to ensure the protection of UN personnel and essential services.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) also condemned the Israeli military for allegedly causing unnecessary harm to Palestinian patients by occupying hospitals in Gaza. Their latest report indicates that during Israeli military operations from 2023 to 2024, several hospitals suffered severe disruption in patient care, with 84 patients reportedly dying due to lack of medical attention exacerbated by bombings and aggressions. Health workers indicated that the military withheld vital supplies including medicine, electricity, and water, which were necessary for those undergoing treatment. HRW characterized this deprivation of basic needs by the Israeli authorities as crimes against humanity and acts of genocide.
As the violence continues, the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip grows increasingly dire, with urgent calls for an end to the hostilities and protection for civilians becoming ever more crucial.
