Escalation in Gaza: Death Toll Soars as Israel Launches New Settlement Plans
A devastating strike by the Israeli Army at a refugee camp in central Gaza on Thursday resulted in approximately 20 Palestinian deaths, as the ongoing offensive against the enclave continues following the harrowing attacks on October 7, 2023, carried out by Hamas and other Palestinian factions. Reports from the Palestinian news agency WAFA indicate that the airstrike targeted a home in the Al Bureij camp, leading to at least 19 fatalities; however, the Filastin newspaper reported that the number could be as high as 23, with many victims from the same family.
As the violence escalates, Gaza authorities under Hamas have announced grim updates, stating that the cumulative death toll from the Israeli campaign has surged to approximately 54,250, with around 123,500 individuals injured as of Thursday. This alarming number reflects the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where international observers have raised concerns over the dire shortages of food and essential goods. Several reports have surfaced, indicating that dozens are succumbing to hunger amidst this critical crisis.
On Wednesday alone, the Gazan Health Ministry recorded 67 deaths and 184 injuries from ongoing Israeli attacks, compounding a devastating situation that has persisted since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was shattered on March 18. They have reported that post-ceasefire, 3,986 individuals have lost their lives, with many fatalities still being discovered among the rubble. Additionally, the health ministry has reported the suspension of intravenous chemotherapy treatments for cancer patients, highlighting that 11,000 individuals suffering from various forms of cancer have been deprived of necessary medical care due to the ongoing conflict.
In a development that underscores increasing tensions, the Israeli government has also confirmed the establishment of 22 new settlements in the West Bank. This announcement came from finance minister Bezalel Smotrich, who described it as a historic step, coinciding with the 58th anniversary of Israel's occupation of the area since 1967. Smotrich emphasized that these settlements represent a strategic shift towards Zionist construction and security for Israel, characterizing the new settlements as a protective measure for the state.
Amidst these escalations, humanitarian agencies in Gaza have been compelled to temporarily suspend operations. Accusations have also surfaced, with Israel blaming Hamas for disseminating misinformation regarding casualty figures and ongoing situations within the premises of aid distribution facilities.
