Ethiopia's Elections: A Controversial Victory for Abiy Ahmed's Prosperity Party
In a decisive outcome widely anticipated by observers, the Prosperity Party led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has won the parliamentary elections in Ethiopia, securing 438 out of 501 available seats. This victory enables the party to easily form a new government, effectively allowing Abiy to continue his leadership for another five years. While the elections took place on June 1, the results have only recently been announced, drawing attention to the electoral process's integrity.
Critics of the elections point to the fact that the Ethiopian electoral system is heavily skewed in favor of the ruling party. Over recent years, Abiy has intensified pressure on the opposition and the press, employing tactics of intimidation that have raised concerns about the fairness of the electoral environment. Reports indicate that numerous opposition politicians have been arrested or have fled the country to escape potential persecution. Additionally, several newspapers and non-governmental organizations perceived as hostile to the government have been shut down, further challenging the prospects of a free and fair electoral process.
In many constituencies, the contest appeared far from democratic. Alarmingly, in over ten percent of the country's electoral districts, candidates from the Prosperity Party ran unopposed, raising questions about the legitimacy of such elections. In regions with stronger opposition sentiments, notably the Tigray region, elections did not take place at all. The Ethiopian government justified this lack of voting by citing concerns over security, a claim that has been met with skepticism.
The Tigray region, which borders Eritrea, has been at the center of a violent conflict from 2020 to 2022, where an armed conflict erupted between the Ethiopian military and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF). This brutal war resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives, and the impacts are still being felt today. Furthermore, reports have surfaced indicating that voting was unexpectedly suspended in parts of the Oromia and Amara regions on election day itself, citing unspecified security issues.
As the international community watches closely, the path forward for Ethiopia remains perilous. The recent election outcome signifies a consolidation of power for Abiy Ahmed, but it simultaneously raises alarms about the health of Ethiopian democracy and the future of political pluralism in the country.
