EU Countries Fail to Issue Joint Declaration Against Russia's Media Actions
On June 26, 2024, at 4:31 PM, Yeva Bobchenko reported that Hungary thwarted an attempt by EU countries to issue a collective declaration condemning Russia's actions towards European media. Multiple diplomats confirmed to the German Press Agency in Brussels that only a statement from EU High Representative Josep Borrell was published instead. The statement expressed the EU's disapproval of Russia's baseless decision to block over 80 European media outlets in the country, further tightening the grip on free press and escalating media censorship in Russia. Following the ban on several Russian media outlets in Europe, Russia retaliated by blacklisting 81 European media companies, including prominent German publications like Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
