EU Defence Ministers Meet in Brussels to Bolster Military Support to Ukraine Amid Hungarian Opposition

European Union defence ministers are convening in Brussels to address the urgency of increasing military aid to Ukraine in the third year of Russia's full-scale invasion. With efforts from Ukraine and several EU states to ramp up weapons and ammunition supplies, Hungary's opposition, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, is posing a significant obstacle. The meeting comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy tours Spain, Belgium, and Portugal, securing pledges for additional support. Spain has pledged 1 billion euros of military aid to Ukraine in 2024, while Belgium plans to equip Ukraine with 30 F16 fighter jets. The Netherlands has also committed to providing parts for a Patriot air defence system. However, an estimated 7 billion euros in military aid remains stalled by Hungary, raising tensions within the EU. Despite the delays, efforts are underway to ensure Ukraine receives the necessary support to defend against ongoing Russian attacks.
