EU Election 2024: Who is Leading in the Polls and What to Expect on Voting Day
Polling institutes in Germany are busy gauging the pre-election sentiment before the European Parliament election set for June 9, 2024. Nearly 65 million people in Germany will cast their votes to determine the German candidates who will enter the EU Parliament. This election is unique as there is no five percent threshold, allowing smaller parties like the Animal Welfare Party, Pirate Party, and Ecological-Democratic Party to secure seats. Polls are indicating a significant lead for the Union parties CDU and CSU, polling at around 30 percent. Meanwhile, the SPD is lagging behind at 14 to 16 percent. The Green Party is experiencing fluctuations in survey figures, ranging between 13 and 15 percent. On the other hand, AfD has lost support since February, dropping from 22 percent to 14-17 percent in the latest surveys. The FDP has maintained a steady 3-5 percent, unaffected by lead candidate Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann. The BSW alliance led by Sahra Wagenknecht is expected to perform well, polling between five and seven percent. The Left Party is also in the mix, ranging between three and four percent in surveys. As the election day approaches, the competition is heating up, with various parties vying for a spot in the EU Parliament.
