European Election 2024: Important Dates and Information
In the European Union, citizens elect new representatives to the European Parliament every five years. This year, Germany is allowing 16-year-olds to vote for the first time. The European Election 2024 in Germany is set to take place on Sunday, June 9, 2024. However, the voting period is from June 6 to June 9, 2024, for all EU member states, as determined by the EU Council.

German citizens are usually automatically registered in the electoral register, with the deadline for registration being 42 days before the election. Eligible voters living abroad who are not registered must apply for registration by May 19, 2024.
The deadline to apply for a postal voting certificate is until Friday, June 7, 6 pm, and in exceptional cases, extended to 3 pm on the election day. Polling stations will be open from 8 am to 6 pm, while mail-in ballots must be submitted by 6 pm on election Sunday.
Vote counting typically starts immediately after the polling stations close, at 6 pm on Sunday. Provisional election results will be announced, with final results expected to be published from June 10, 2024, onwards.
