European Parliament Awards 2024 Sakharov Prize to Venezuelan Leaders
On Thursday, the European Parliament awarded the prestigious Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought for 2024 to Venezuelan opposition leaders María Corina Machado and Edmundo González. This recognition is a testament to their relentless fight for democracy against the oppressive regime of Nicolás Maduro. The award highlights the European Parliament’s continued support for the Venezuelan cause, placing a spotlight on Machado and González's efforts to restore freedom and democracy in their country.
The award serves as a significant affirmation of the opposition's struggle. The European Parliament had previously acknowledged Edmundo González as the elected president of Venezuela in a resolution passed at the end of September, calling for the necessary steps to secure his inauguration on January 10.
Machado and González were nominated for the Sakharov Prize based on recommendations from the European Peoples Party (EPP) and backing from other right-wing factions, including Italy's Conservative and Reformists party, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, as well as Viktor Orbán's Patriots of Europe and Marine Le Pen's National Rally.
The proposal of Machado and González garnered overwhelming support, ultimately surpassing other strong contenders, such as Azerbaijani climate activist Gubad Ibadoghlu, whose candidacy was backed by the Greens, and two women's organizations from the Middle East, which received the support of social democrats and liberals.
The selection process culminated in a decision made by the European Parliament’s Conference of Presidents, which consists of the heads of various political groups and the Parliament's President. The winners are set to receive their prize during a formal ceremony in December, held during a plenary session in Strasbourg.
This accolade not only serves to elevate the profiles of Machado and González but also represents a broader commitment from the European Parliament to stand in solidarity with those fighting for democratic freedoms around the world, particularly in regions where oppressive regimes hinder the rights and voices of citizens.
