European Union Minister and Former Qatar Environment Minister Discuss Green Transition and Energy Investments at Athens Energy Summit
During the Athens Energy Summit, European Union Environment and Energy Minister Thodoros Skylakakis emphasized the challenges faced in implementing the green transition framework due to numerous rules and minimal effectiveness. Skylakakis highlighted the need for member countries to finance the green transition while addressing the repercussions of the climate crisis, underscoring the necessity of investments in this regard. He also mentioned that energy storage in batteries will progress without subsidies and that the development of hydrogen technology still requires time to become competitive. Former environment minister of Qatar, Mohammed bin Abdullah AlRumaihi, focused on investments in natural gas extraction and transportation, as well as renewable energy sources. He projected an increase in the liquefied natural gas transportation fleet and a significant growth in photovoltaic installations by 2030. AlRumaihi also emphasized Greece's strategic geopolitical position as a gateway for natural gas supply to landlocked northern countries, suggesting that hydrocarbon exploration could further enhance the country's standing in the energy landscape.
