Ex-PM Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli Arrested Amid Violent Protest Fallout in Nepal
Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli, the former Prime Minister of Nepal, has been arrested amidst escalating tensions following his resignation in September. He faces accusations of negligence for failing to act decisively to suppress the violent protests that led to his departure, resulting in 77 fatalities and over 2400 injuries.
These protests, widely participated by young people, have been dubbed the 'Gen Z protests,' referring to those born roughly between 1997 and 2012. Demonstrators took to the streets for several days, effectively blocking significant cities, including the capital, Kathmandu, where they set fire to parliament and other key government institutions.
Oli's arrest was executed following a recommendation from a special investigation committee regarding the violent crackdown on the protests. This occurred just a day after the swearing-in of new Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah, a key leader of the protests. Shah, who is also a former mayor of Kathmandu and known for his career in rap music, is a member of a centrist party and has been vocal about the call for political renewal that resonated during the demonstrations.
Sharma Oli, a senior member of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), has decades of political experience but has faced backlash for being viewed as part of a corrupt and ineffectual political elite, indifferent to the desires of the populace.
The arrest has sparked immediate reactions, with his supporters taking to the streets of Kathmandu, indicating that the rift in Nepal's political landscape remains deep. As the new administration begins, the implications of this upheaval are still unfolding, and the echoes of the protests linger around the corridors of power in Nepal.
