Explosions Rock Brasília's Government District Amid Suspected Attack

Two explosions rattled the government district of Brasília, Brazil’s capital, leading investigators to suspect an orchestrated attack. Reports from state news agency Agência Brasil indicated that the alleged assailant lost his life during the incident. Preliminary findings reveal that the man detonated an explosive device strapped to his body near the Brazilian Supreme Court. Just moments before, a separate explosion occurred in a vehicle parked near the House of Representatives. Both blasts were registered less than a minute apart, occurring around 7:30 PM local time at Praça dos Três Poderes, the central hub where the Supreme Court, the presidential palace, and Congress are situated. Miraculously, no other individuals were reported injured. The motive behind this shocking attack remains unclear, but media outlets have noted that the vehicle involved was registered to a supporter of right-wing former President Jair Bolsonaro. Firefighters and military explosives experts swiftly arrived at the scene following the explosions. Reports indicate that the man attempted to breach the Supreme Court (STF), according to the acting governor of the federal district, Celina Leão, but he was unsuccessful. His lifeless body was located outside the court post-explosion. At the time of the blasts, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had already exited the government seat. The Supreme Court stated that judges and their staff were relocated to safety following the incident. Attorney General Jorge Messias expressed strong condemnation towards the attacks on the Supreme Court and the House of Representatives via the platform X, affirming that the police would conduct a rapid and thorough investigation to uncover the motives behind the attacks and to restore peace and security in the area.
