Farmers' Protests Escalate Across Greece Amidst Tensions with Police
Tensions escalated across Greece on Wednesday as approximately 200 farmers in Corinth, Peloponnese, engaged in clashes with police while attempting to block the national highway at the Kiato junction. In response to the protests, law enforcement deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd, resulting in the highway remaining closed for about an hour in both directions before order was restored.
Meanwhile, in northern Greece, farmers briefly obstructed the Evzoni border checkpoint with North Macedonia, only to reopen it around 1:45 PM after initially closing it at noon. A symbolic blockade also took place in Halkidona, near Thessaloniki; this protest commenced at 12:45 PM and concluded after an hour.
Ongoing protests continued at the Promachonas checkpoint near Serres, where farmers maneuvered their tractors past police barriers. Furthermore, farmers from Alexandria, Imathia, blocked traffic in the lane toward Veria on the Egnatia highway, declaring an open-ended protest.
On the Thessaloniki-Athens highway, the lane directed towards Athens at the Malgara tolls has remained closed since Monday as farmers insist it will stay shut until their demands are met. The protests highlight the mounting frustrations among farmers regarding various issues, emphasizing their call for attention and support from government authorities.
