Former Catalan Radio Director Saül Gordillo Accepts Prison Sentence for Sexual Assault
Saül Gordillo, the former director of Catalunya Ràdio and the Catalan News Agency (ACN), has accepted a sentence of one and a half years in prison for sexually assaulting a female reporter from El Principal. The incident occurred after a company dinner in December 2022. Details from El Periódico de Catalunya and legal sources confirm that this agreement came after the Prosecutor's Office initially called for a four-year prison term.
As part of the plea agreement with the Prosecutor's Office and the private prosecution initiated by the victim, Gordillo has acknowledged committing sexual assault by performing oral sex on the reporter without her consent in a vehicle while taking her home after the Christmas gathering. This follows a previous conviction of one year in prison he received for groping another journalist from the same media organization during the same event.
In addition to the prison sentence, the agreement imposes further conditions on Gordillo. He will face two years of supervised release, a four-year prohibition on approaching or communicating with the victim, and a two-year disqualification from any work involving minors. Notably, the terms also include a requirement for Gordillo to take a sexual education course and to pay a fine of 1,440 euros.
Under the plea agreement, the victim and the prosecution have indicated they will not contest the potential suspension of Gordillo's prison sentence provided he adheres to the stipulated conditions, which aim at preventing future offenses. This case highlights ongoing issues surrounding sexual misconduct within the media industry and the critical importance of ensuring justice for victims of such crimes.
