Former EU Diplomat Federica Mogherini Resigns Amid Corruption Allegations
Federica Mogherini, the former chief diplomat of the European Union and Italian Foreign Minister, has resigned from her role as rector at the College of Europe, a prestigious institution in Bruges, Belgium. This decision comes in the wake of corruption allegations following her recent questioning by authorities. In her statement, Mogherini emphasized that her resignation aligns with the utmost rigor and fairness she has always upheld in her duties.
The corruption allegations came to light on Tuesday and, although Mogherini has denied any wrongdoing, she has pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation by the European Public Prosecutors Office (EPPO). Alongside her, EU senior official Stefano Sannino and a College of Europe employee were taken into custody. After questioning, they were released, but it was announced that they are now officially considered suspects.
The EPPO's investigations are focusing on serious accusations against the trio, including procurement fraud, corruption, conflicts of interest, and breaches of professional confidentiality. Reports suggest that they are under scrutiny for potential misconduct related to EU-funded training programs for aspiring diplomats. Specifically, investigators are looking into whether they had prior knowledge of selection criteria or project awards, which could imply that confidential information may have been improperly shared with an applicant.
Stefano Sannino has reportedly been relieved of his duties amid these allegations.
Mogherini held a significant position as the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Vice President of the European Commission from 2014 to 2019, before stepping into her role at the College of Europe. She has also served as the director of the EU's diplomatic academy, renowned for training future officials and diplomats of the European Union.
As the investigation unfolds, the implications of these allegations could have far-reaching effects on Mogherini's legacy and the institutions involved.
