Former EU Officials Detained in Misappropriation Investigation Released by Belgian Police
Italian politician Federica Mogherini, who has held significant positions within the European Union, including Vice President of the European Commission, was released by Belgian police on Tuesday after being detained and interrogated in connection with an investigation into the misappropriation of European funds. Mogherini, currently serving as the rector of the College of Europe—a postgraduate institution in Bruges—was questioned alongside two other prominent figures: Stefano Sannino, the former director of the European Union's External Action Service (EEAS), and Cesare Zegretti, a fellow member of the College of Europe.
The investigation is conducted by the European Public Prosecutors Office, which specializes in financial misconduct involving the EU. The prosecutors accuse the trio of engaging in fraud related to public procurement, as well as corruption, conflict of interest, and breach of professional secrecy. Specifically, they are charged with having improperly used European funds to finance activities at the College of Europe between 2021 and 2022.
All three individuals were released after the police determined that there was no risk of flight, allowing them to return to their professional responsibilities. The developments raise serious questions about the financial governance within institutions associated with the European Union, especially given the stature of the individuals involved and their previous roles in key EU positions. Mogherini's previous work as a member of parliament with the Democratic Party and her role as Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs added to the intrigue surrounding the case, highlighting the potential implications of alleged financial mismanagement at high levels of European governance.
As investigations continue, the scrutiny on EU officials regarding the usage of public funds is expected to intensify, with calls for increased transparency and accountability in European institutions. The outcome of this case could have significant ramifications for the individuals involved as well as for the integrity of EU institutions.
