Former FC Barcelona President Sandro Rosell Awarded €232,500 in Court Compensation
The National Court has awarded former FC Barcelona president Sandro Rosell compensation of €232,500 for the 645 days he spent in provisional custody from May 2017 to February 2019. Rosell was imprisoned on charges of organized crime and money laundering, allegations related to commissions from the Brazilian national team and a contract with a sports brand, from which he was eventually acquitted.
While Rosell initially sought €297 million in compensation from the State, claiming damages—both moral and economic—stemming from his time in custody, the court ruling acknowledges the severe impact his imprisonment had on his life and finances. During the 645 days, Rosell was forced to abandon his business ventures and incurred significant legal defense costs. Additionally, his family faced considerable expenses traveling to visit him in prison.
This case highlights ongoing discussions about the implications of judicial decisions and the consequences of pre-trial detention, especially when it involves public figures. The compensation awarded to Rosell may not equate to the full extent of his claimed damages, but it stands as a recognition of the time he spent wrongfully imprisoned. As reactions to the ruling continue to unfold, it raises important questions about justice, accountability, and the rights of individuals within the legal system.
