Former South Korean President Moon Jae-in Indicted on Corruption Charges

On Thursday, former South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who served from 2017 to 2022, was indicted for corruption, according to the prosecution. It is alleged that during his term, Moon facilitated the appointment of former parliament member Lee Sang-jik as the head of the Korea SMEs and Startups Agency (KOSME), a government-funded nonprofit agency. In return, it is claimed that Moon obtained the hiring of his former son-in-law, identified only by the surname Seo, at Thai Eastar Jet, a Thai airline where Lee served as CEO.

Seo's appointment is under scrutiny as he reportedly lacked experience and qualifications in the aviation sector. The salary he received between 2018 and 2020, totaling 217 million won (approximately 134,000 euros), is alleged to have been a bribe that was collected by Moon himself. This situation has sparked significant controversy and raised questions about the integrity of Moon's administration. As the investigation continues, the implications of this case could have far-reaching effects on South Korea's political landscape.
