Freed Journalist Pablo González Faces Health Challenges After Release from Polish Prison

Pablo González, the journalist who was freed on July 1 after nearly two and a half years in pre-trial detention in Poland, is currently under medical observation in Moscow. Medical tests have revealed issues with his lungs, which could have been caused by the harsh conditions of his imprisonment, wherein he was kept without natural airflow, facing high humidity and extreme cold in winter without heating, followed by suffocating heat in summer. This was shared by González's wife, Oihana Goiriena, to Europa Press.

During his imprisonment, González also contracted Covid-19, which may have severely impacted his respiratory health. Goiriena reported that she has communicated with him twice since his release. González has expressed a strong desire to return to Nabarniz in Biscay, where his family resides; however, he must first undergo medical checks and retrieve the documentation that was confiscated during his arrest.

Goiriena noted that their children have demonstrated remarkable resilience, effortlessly resuming conversations with their father over the phone. The family is overjoyed and relieved by González’s release, even as he continues to come to terms with his newfound freedom.

González, who contributes to various media outlets, was relocated to Russia after his release. His wife highlighted the stark contrast in living conditions, saying, 'He tells us, here I am, but the windows can be opened, I go to the bathroom, and I am not being recorded. It’s another world,' she emphasized.
