Freedom Party Makes History in Austrian Parliamentary Election
The Freedom Party FPÖ has marked a historic turning point in Austria's political landscape by emerging as the largest party in the recent parliamentary election. Party leader Herbert Kickl celebrated this significant achievement in a victory speech in Vienna, stating, "Together we have made a piece of history today. We have opened the door to a new era. What we have achieved exceeds my wildest dreams."
With 99.4% of the votes counted, the FPÖ garnered support from 28.8% of the electorate, overtaking the conservative People's Party ÖVP, which secured only 26.3% of the vote—representing a decline of over 11 percentage points since the last election in 2019. In contrast, the FPÖ gained nearly 13 percentage points, marking its first time at the top in a parliamentary election and making it the first far-right party to win such an election in Austria since World War II.
Kickl's victory speech emphasized that the voters are demanding change, as he declared, "Voters have put their foot down," signaling a desire for a departure from the status quo. Despite this success, challenges loom ahead for Kickl. The FPÖ does not have an absolute majority, and negotiations with other parties seem bleak, as none are keen on collaborating with a party under Kickl's leadership.
The incumbent Chancellor Karl Nehammer of the People's Party is expected to initiate coalition talks with the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), which obtained 21% of the votes, but this could prove difficult. Andreas Babler, the current SPÖ leader, has shifted the party further to the left, which complicates potential alliances. Furthermore, Austrian President Alexander von der Bellen has expressed criticism of FPÖ's stances on several key issues including EU migration and the Ukraine conflict.
Given these political dynamics, it remains uncertain whether President von der Bellen will task the FPÖ with the responsibility of forming a government. Political analysts suggest that Nehammer may be given the opportunity to lead the coalition negotiations, potentially sidelining the Freedom Party despite its electoral success. As Austria navigates this pivotal moment, all eyes will be on how the political landscape unfolds in the coming weeks.
