French President Emmanuel Macron Announces Dissolution of National Assembly After Far-Right Victory in European Elections

Following the defeat of his centrist camp in the European elections, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the dissolution of the French National Assembly. Macron declared new elections for June 30th, addressing the voters and highlighting the rise of nationalists as a danger to France and Europe. The farright Rassemblement National party, led by Marine Le Pen, emerged victorious in the election, obtaining 31.5% to 32.4% of the votes. Macron's pro-European camp only received about 15.2%. The Socialists landed in third place with 14% to 14.3%. This defeat marks a significant setback for Macron, as the farright has now significantly expanded its lead over his centrist forces. With Macron ineligible to run for a third term in the 2027 presidential election, the challenge remains for the centrist camp to nominate a suitable candidate to stand against Le Pen, who has successfully presented a more moderate image of the farright party in recent years.
