French Prosecutors Investigate Racist Attack on Kylian Mbappé by Paraguayan Senator
Prosecutors in France have initiated an investigation following a racist attack directed at football star Kylian Mbappé by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla. The French Football Federation (FFF) filed a complaint with the national unit dedicated to combating online hate, prompting the inquiry and raising the possibility of charging Amarilla with aggravated public insult or incitement to hatred or violence.
The incident unfolded after a disappointing loss for Paraguay against France in the World Cup, where Amarilla took to social media to unleash a barrage of racial abuse against the French captain. Her comments were described by the FFF as 'utterly abhorrent and unacceptable.' In her tirade, Amarilla labeled Mbappé as a 'colonised Cameroonian' and suggested that Paraguayan players should have 'slapped him' after the match.
In response, Mbappé condemned Amarilla’s remarks, calling her a 'despicable woman' and stating that she does not represent Paraguay, a country rich in passion and honor. He criticized Amarilla for diverting attention from the impressive achievements of Paraguayan players during the World Cup.
The Paris prosecutors noted that Amarilla's comments could represent hate crimes under French law, which punishes such offenses with a potential one-year imprisonment and hefty fines.
Following the outcry, Amarilla issued an open letter in both French and Spanish, attempting to redirect blame to Mbappé and claiming her remarks stemmed from anger over his behavior during the game. Although she expressed regret over the insults she had hurled at Mbappé, she simultaneously criticized his response and threatened legal action if he did not retract his statements.
In the wake of the incident, the Paraguayan government distanced itself from Amarilla's comments, asserting that they do not reflect the views of the government or the Paraguayan people. President Emmanuel Macron of France publicly supported Mbappé, emphasizing the need to respond to such unacceptable behavior with dignity and respect, while Paraguay's president, Santiago Peña, also reached out to express condemnation of Amarilla's comments.
This troubling event underscores the ongoing challenge of addressing racism in sports and highlights the necessity for accountability among public figures.
