Gabriel Le Senne Remains President of Balearic Parliament Amid Controversy

Gabriel Le Senne, president of the Balearic Parliament and member of the Vox party, will continue in his position despite a recent push for his dismissal led by leftist parties. This proposal was brought to an extraordinary plenary session on Tuesday but ultimately failed due to the abstention of the People's Party (PP).

The leftist factions in the Parliament have been vocal about their discontent following an incident on June 18, when Le Senne was seen tearing up a photograph of murdered republican women during a session. This act was viewed as a significant affront by many, prompting calls for his removal.

However, the attempt to oust Le Senne was halted as the left was unable to secure the supermajority—three-fifths of the chamber's support—that is necessary for such a decision. The parliamentary spokesperson for the PP, Sebastià Sagreras, announced that his party would abstain from voting on the proposal, which played a pivotal role in its failure.

In defense of Le Senne, members of the Vox party stood by him, emphasizing the necessity of parliamentary decorum and arguing against the censure from the left. Le Senne, acknowledging that he made errors, justified his actions but maintained a strong stance regarding his right to express his political views.

The political climate in the Balearic Parliament remains tense, especially as the different parties grappling with opinions surrounding freedom of speech and respect for historical atrocities. Le Senne’s continued presidency raises questions about the future dynamics within the chamber and the ongoing conflicts between political ideologies.

This incident highlights not only the intense political polarization in Spain but also the challenges faced by politicians when navigating deeply sensitive historical issues. As the Parliament moves forward, it will be crucial to monitor how these events influence legislative discussions and public sentiment in the Balearic Islands.
