Gas Explosion in Noáin Navarra Leaves Nine Injured and Hundreds Evacuated

A gas explosion in a residential block on Concejo de Zabalegui street in Noáin, Navarra, has resulted in nine injuries and the evacuation of approximately 250 residents. The emergency management center SOS Navarra 112 was alerted to the incident at 6:02 PM. Firefighters from the Cordovilla park quickly arrived on the scene, alongside seven ambulances, including specialized advanced life support units.

The explosion was reportedly caused by a gas leak, which ignited and triggered significant damage to the residential area, prompting swift action from local emergency services. In response, police established a security perimeter to control the situation and ensure public safety.

From the nine individuals injured, seven were transported to the University Hospital of Navarra in Pamplona. Among the injured were a 22-year-old man and a 13-year-old girl, both admitted to intensive care units with serious prognoses. Additional injured include a 57-year-old man and a 54-year-old man, as well as a 49-year-old woman and a second 49-year-old man, all of whom remain under observation due to their conditions. A 58-year-old man was also evaluated for multiple contusions.

In addition to those severely injured, two people were treated for anxiety and smoke inhalation at the Noáin health center but were later discharged. Emergency teams worked diligently throughout the afternoon to cut off the gas supply and ventilate the affected residences, thus mitigating further risk of gas accumulation.

The local Municipal Police facilitated the relocation of remaining residents, many of whom sought refuge in the homes of family or neighbors. For those needing accommodation, local hotels were arranged to host evacuees. The affected area has been cordoned off, with both gas and electricity supplies suspended, as investigations into the cause of the explosion continue.

Once the gas leak was successfully addressed, local authorities permitted residents to re-enter their properties briefly in order to collect essential documents, medications, and personal items. However, the homes remain secured as the Foral Police and Civil Guard conduct a thorough investigation into the incident's cause.
