Gérard Depardieu Convicted of Sexual Assault: A Turning Point for French Cinema
French actor Gérard Depardieu, renowned as France's biggest film star and with an extensive career featuring over 200 films and TV series, has been convicted of sexually assaulting two women during the filming of 'Les Volets Verts' (The Green Shutters) in September 2021. Depardieu, 76, received an 18-month suspended prison sentence, marking a significant moment in the French film industry amid the ongoing MeToo movement.
The court heard harrowing testimonies from victims who detailed the assaults they suffered at the hands of the acclaimed actor. One of the victims, a 54-year-old set dresser named Amélie, recounted how Depardieu had aggressively trapped her between his legs on set, groping her buttocks, pubis, and chest while using obscene language. She recalled feeling intense fear during the encounter, describing Depardieu's presence as both intimidating and menacing. "I saw his eyes light up with a kind of pleasure in making someone afraid," she testified.
In addition to the assault against Amélie, another victim, a 34-year-old assistant director, described multiple instances of inappropriate behavior, including being touched against her will on three separate occasions. This second woman, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed the terror she felt during each incident, stating that she had clearly said 'no' to Depardieu’s advances.
Despite the convictions, Depardieu denied the allegations, claiming that they were part of a media effort to damage his reputation. He also criticized the MeToo movement, warning that it could turn into a form of terror.
