Germany Opens the Door for Long-Range Missiles to Ukraine

On Monday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that Western countries will no longer impose restrictions on the range of weapons provided to Ukraine for its defense against Russia. The move to allow long-range missiles will enable Ukraine to strike enemy targets hundreds of kilometers away, including those within Russian territory. Merz stated that this agreement has been reached among the key suppliers of military aid to Ukraine, namely Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Among these nations, only Germany has yet to deliver long-range missiles to Ukraine.

This declaration signifies a crucial shift in Germany's military policy, especially as it relates to the provision of advanced weaponry to Ukraine. Merz indicated that Germany could supply Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles, capable of hitting targets up to 500 kilometers away. This potential change in military support is particularly noteworthy given the previous stance of former Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who had been reluctant to send the Taurus missiles citing concerns over escalating the conflict.

The decision marks a significant evolution in Germany's approach to its role in the ongoing conflict, as it looks to bolster Ukraine's defensive capabilities amid continued aggression from Russia. The shift not only strengthens Ukraine's position in the ongoing war, but also reflects a unified stance among Western nations towards supporting Kyiv against Russian advances.
