Giorgia Meloni and Marco Rubio Hold Talks Amid Tensions with Trump
On Friday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio for discussions at her office in Palazzo Chigi. The meeting began with a cordial handshake and a cheek kiss between Meloni and Rubio, followed by a photo opportunity with dignitaries, including US Ambassador to Italy, Tilman J Fertitta.
Rubio's visit to Rome included a prior meeting with his Italian counterpart, Antonio Tajani, signaling a diplomatic effort to strengthen bilateral relations. Notably, on Thursday, he also met with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican in a session described as friendly and constructive. This visit comes on the heels of previous tensions surrounding U.S. President Donald Trump’s critical remarks towards the Pope regarding his stance on the Iran war, and subsequent remarks aimed at Meloni for her defense of the pontiff.
Despite the optimistic engagements during Rubio's trip, the political atmosphere remains charged. Reports indicate that Trump has continued to express his discontent with Pope Leo after the arrangements for Rubio's visit were made. American media cites Trump’s directive to Rubio: "I told him to tell the pope very politely and with great respect that Iran cannot possess a nuclear weapon." Trump exacerbated the situation by highlighting Iran's human rights abuses, mentioning, "I also told him to tell the pope that Iran killed 42000 innocent protesters who were not armed."
As these diplomatic discussions unfold, the complex interplay of U.S. and Italian interests alongside religious and political considerations adds layers to international relations between these pivotal nations.
