Global Progressive Mobilisation Summit: A Call for a Unified Future
Former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero addressed a significant gathering at the Global Progressive Mobilisation held in Barcelona, attended by over 3,000 participants from more than 50 countries. He urged progressives around the world to unite, stating, "This may be the most important international progressive summit of this century." Zapatero emphasized the event's significance, as it serves as a crucial platform for deliberation on the kind of future we desire for the 21st century.
The summit, taking place on April 17 and 18, gathers various organizations and experts aiming to tackle pressing global challenges such as the rise of far-right ideologies, increasing inequality, the climate crisis, and threats to democratic institutions. Zapatero pointed out that the timing of the summit is particularly apt, encouraging attendees to make decisive commitments toward a more equitable and peaceful world.
Notably, Barcelona was chosen as the host city, a decision Zapatero described as a reflection of Spain's current leadership, characterized by courage and progressive goals. The event features notable attendees, including Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Brazilian President Lula da Silva, and Colombian President Gustavo Petro. A key moment in the summit includes a meeting between Sánchez and Lula da Silva, who expressed support for Sánchez's anti-war initiative during his speech.
Lula da Silva praised Sánchez's leadership, highlighting the growth of their coalition and urging attendees to convey a message of hope. He warned against a regression to past authoritarian tendencies, recalling the rise of Hitler, and emphasized the need for vigilance and proactive measures in defending democratic values.
The Global Progressive Mobilisation is positioned as a necessary effort to foster a collective response among social democratic and progressive parties worldwide. As the summit continues, participants are tasked with developing strategies that advocate for inclusivity, sustainability, and the protection of democratic principles in the face of ongoing global challenges.
