Global Sumud Flotilla Sets Sail Amidst Challenges to Break Gaza Blockade
The Global Sumud Flotilla, comprising twenty ships, departed from Barcelona on Monday, heading towards Tunisia to join other vessels in an effort to break the Israeli blockade on Gaza. However, five smaller boats had to return due to severe weather conditions, which the organization stated was for the safety of their crews. Such challenges are reportedly common when small civilian vessels undertake missions that should be the responsibility of governments, as they aim to end the siege and what they describe as genocide.
The Flotilla organizers emphasized the urgency of their mission, highlighting that if even one of the governments complicit in the blockade provided their more capable ships, many of these obstacles could be avoided. The remaining vessels are committed to continuing their journey, with plans to meet ships departing from Tunisia, Greece, and Italy, ultimately reaching Gaza with humanitarian aid.
Despite the adverse weather and threats from the Israeli government, the Flotilla is determined to fulfill its mission. On Monday, Israeli Minister of Security Itamar Ben-Gvir proposed a plan to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to tackle what he termed the largest attempt to breach the blockade, considering all activists on board the ships as terrorists.
Ben-Gvir's proposal suggests intercepting all ships and sending their crews to maximum-security prisons, including Ketziot and Damon. Unlike previous flotilla incidents, such as with the Handala or Madleen flotillas where activists were deported, Israel's current strategy appears to focus on prolonged detention of the participants.
In light of these developments, organizer Saif Abukeshek, a Hispanic-Palestinian activist, noted in an interview with El HuffPost that Israel's response will be influenced by international pressure. He remarked that Israel's actions always correlate with the complicity of foreign governments. Abukeshek reiterated that their organization will continue to fulfill its mission, highlighting that their efforts are necessary due to the failure of governments to protect innocent lives. The Flotilla's resolve showcases the indomitable spirit of those striving for humanitarian efforts in the face of adversity.
