Harnessing Lunar Energy: The Innovative Tidal Kite Project from SKF and Minesto

In a bold new venture, SKF has partnered with Minesto, a leader in marine energy development, to launch an ambitious program that seeks to harness lunar energy through tidal power. Unlike traditional space programs, this initiative is grounded here on Earth, focusing on utilizing the natural resources available to us.

The Faroe Islands are leading the charge toward a greener future with one of the world's most aggressive energy transition plans, aiming for 100% renewable energy by 2030. The innovative space project, dubbed a 'space program that never leaves Earth,' directly addresses the pressing need for sustainable energy solutions. Instead of ascending into the cosmos, this 'spacecraft' descends into the ocean, where its turbines capture energy from the daily tidal currents.

At the heart of this initiative is Minesto's groundbreaking invention—a tidal kite named Luna. This remarkable technology effectively generates predictable and renewable energy by taking advantage of the moon's gravitational pull. Once deployed, Luna stealthily operates underwater, harvesting energy from water currents in complete silence and without interference from weather conditions.

"For us as a technology development company, working with a global industrial leader like SKF is both an educational experience and an inspiration," stated Martin Edlund, CEO of Minesto. The potential impact of this technology is vast; it is estimated that there are at least 3,000 additional sites across the globe akin to the Faroe Islands, capable of harnessing lunar energy. Should they all participate in this initiative, lunar energy could replace an overwhelming portion of global coal power production.

The energy kite Luna boasts a nominal output of 12 megawatts, which can provide electricity to as many as 200 villas annually. Minesto's ambitious next step is to establish a new tidal energy facility with a capacity of 200 megawatts. This facility could meet approximately 40% of the expected electricity demand in the Faroe Islands by 2030, contributing to a greener future for the small island nation home to 50,000 residents and 70,000 sheep, who will benefit from renewable electricity.

Collaboration plays a critical role in this endeavor. SKF has designed the necessary bearing and sealing systems for the kite's rudders and elevators, while their sophisticated software predicts the lifespan of these components and estimates CO2 emissions. This dual perspective allows for the analysis of different solutions not only through a technical lens but also regarding their sustainability.

Annika Ölme, Chief Technology Officer of SKF Group, emphasized that collaboration across industries is essential for making progress. "Together with Minesto, we demonstrate how technology and innovation can propel the transition to renewable energy." By framing their initiative in the context of a space program grounded on Earth, the partners draw attention to the value of utilizing our existing planetary resources to generate cleaner energy.

The significance of this project extends far beyond the Faroe Islands. According to the International Energy Agency, a staggering 80% of global electricity is still produced using fossil fuels. Looking toward the future, marine energy is projected to make up an important segment of the energy mix, particularly by 2050. It is local, renewable, and predictable, positioning tidal energy as a complementary source to more established renewables like wind and solar.

The Ocean Energy Europe report suggests that marine energy could potentially supply 10% of Europe’s electricity while creating 400,000 qualified jobs by 2050. This tidal kite project represents an incredible step forward in harnessing marine energy to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, ultimately positioning us toward a more sustainable future where energy is both green and abundant.
