Dubbed as a 'space program that never intends to leave the Earth', this initiative exemplifies the potential of using the Moon's gravitational pull to generate renewable energy without venturing beyond our atmosphere.

Since its inception in 1907, SKF has crafted technologies that minimize friction and enhance efficiency in various sectors. The partnership with Minesto introduces a tidal kite named Luna, designed to operate beneath the ocean's surface, drawing energy from the Earth's daily tidal currents caused by the Moon. The Faroe Islands lead the way in implementing ambitious energy transition programs, with a goal to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2030. With a population of around 50,000 and a robust sheep industry of 70,000, the islands are set to benefit significantly from the new tidal kite, which boasts a nominal output of 12 MW—enough to power 200 villas for a year. The overarching vision includes the installation of a larger 200 MW tidal energy facility that is expected to meet 40% of the electricity requirements by 2030.

The potential exists for over 3,000 locations worldwide, akin to the Faroe Islands, to engage in this transformative project, suggesting that tidal energy could significantly reduce reliance on coal globally.

They have developed bearings and sealing systems for the kites' rudders and elevators, while their software predicts the longevity of bearings and estimates CO2 emissions associated with various solutions.

According to estimates from the International Energy Agency, more than 80% of global electricity is currently derived from fossil fuels. However, ocean energy, which could provide 10% of Europe’s electricity and create around 400,000 qualified jobs by 2050, presents a viable and renewable alternative. The stability and predictability of tidal energy make it a solid companion to more conventional renewable sources like wind and solar power.
