The Invisible Tidal Kite
This innovative space program addresses an urgent global need for renewable energy solutions. The technology at its core, the tidal kite named Luna, operates underwater, quietly and invisibly harnessing energy from predictable tidal currents driven by the moon's gravitational pull, irrespective of weather conditions. According to Martin Edlund, CEO of Minesto, collaborating with a global industrial leader like SKF not only serves as an educational experience but also ignites inspiration. He mentioned, "We estimate that there are at least 3,000 more Faroe Islands out there that qualify for our space program. If they all join, moon energy can replace all coal power capacity currently being developed globally."
Meeting Energy Needs
With a nominal output of 12 MW, the Luna energy kite has the capacity to provide electricity for up to 200 villas for a year. Looking ahead, Minesto's next goal is a new tidal energy facility of 200 MW, which could satiate 40% of the electricity demands anticipated by 2030. This is particularly crucial for the small yet vibrant island nation of 50,000 residents and 70,000 sheep, striving to produce all its electricity from renewable sources. This venture is a collaborative effort with the local utility company, Sev. Hákun Djurhuus, the CEO of Sev, stated, "Our vision is to achieve 100% renewable electricity production by 2030, and we believe that tidal power could prove to be an important part of this journey."

SKF's role includes the design of critical components such as bearing and sealing systems for the kite's rudders and elevators. Additionally, SKF has developed software to predict the lifespan of these bearings while also estimating associated CO2 emissions, facilitating a comprehensive comparison of various solutions from both technical and sustainability viewpoints. Annika Ölme, Chief Technology Officer of the SKF Group, emphasized that cross-industry collaboration is essential for meaningful progress. She stated, "Together with Minesto, we show how technology and innovation can drive the transition to renewable energy."
