Healthcare Workers Strike Threatens Millions of Scheduled Services
On Wednesday, November 20, a national strike by healthcare personnel is set to disrupt approximately 12 million scheduled healthcare services across the country. Proclaimed by major trade unions in the sector, this one-day strike will involve a wide range of healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, veterinarians, and health managers, affecting staff from the National Health Service, along with affiliated companies and agencies.
According to the trade unions, all services will be at risk during the 24-hour walkout. This includes an estimated 50,000 radiological exams, 15,000 scheduled surgeries, and around 100,000 specialist consultations. However, the unions have assured that emergency and urgent care services will continue to be operational, providing some relief amid the chaos.
The strike has been organized by unions including Anaao Assomed, CimoFesmed, and Nursing Up, primarily as a response to the measures outlined in the budget proposal for the upcoming fiscal year. This budget bill, which discusses state spending and revenue for 2025, is scheduled for parliamentary examination and approval by the end of the year. The unions' decision to strike stems from multiple grievances, including a lack of salary increases, inadequate resources, and unfulfilled hiring promises.
The mobilization also seeks to highlight the need for enhanced safety protections for healthcare workers, who often face challenging conditions in hospitals. Union leaders assert that the latest budget bill reflects a continued reduction of funding allocated to healthcare, contradicting previous assurances made by the government in recent weeks. As healthcare professionals prepare to take a stand, they are sending a clear message demanding better support, fair compensation, and a commitment to addressing the ongoing challenges faced by the sector.
