High-Speed Vehicle Attack in Modena Leaves Several Injured
A vehicle traveling at high speed struck several pedestrians this Saturday in the heart of Modena, a city in northern Italy, resulting in at least ten people affected and multiple injuries, including two individuals in serious condition, as reported by various Italian media outlets. The incident took place on Via Emilia, one of the city's main thoroughfares.
Following the collision, the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. During the pursuit, a bystander attempted to intervene but was stabbed by the suspect before the latter managed to escape, according to the Ansa news agency.
Quick action by local police led to the driver's apprehension shortly after the incident. Initial reports identify him as a 31-year-old Italian national, the son of parents originally from North Africa. Local media indicate that he has no prior criminal record and is currently undergoing interrogation by law enforcement.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities seeking to understand the motivation behind the incident. "We need to ascertain the reasons, as this is a dramatic act. I am deeply affected; regardless of the circumstances, this is a very serious matter," stated Massimo Mezzetti, the mayor of Modena. He emphasized the need for clarity regarding whether this incident may be linked to terrorist motives, calling it an especially grave concern if true.
The area surrounding the incident was swiftly cordoned off, allowing police and emergency services to tend to the injured and gather evidence in order to elucidate the circumstances of the event. Reports suggest that the vehicle involved in the act was a Citroën C3. Authorities are actively investigating to ascertain whether the collision was a deliberate attack.
