Historic EU Summit: Ukraine's President Zelensky Secures Major Support
The star guest at the EU summit on Thursday was Volodymyr Zelensky, and the Ukrainian president did not leave Brussels empty-handed. This week, the EU opened accession negotiations with Ukraine. In addition, the G7 countries promised an additional 50 billion euros in financial aid. Furthermore, on Thursday, the security guarantees that Kyiv previously received from individual countries were taken over by the entire EU. Zelensky thanked the government leaders for the historic decision to start negotiations on his country's EU accession, stating that 'This is very important for the whole of Ukraine. We have been waiting for this for a long time.' President Zelensky, appearing in his usual military olive green attire, made a plea for more air defense systems for his troops on the front lines. Chancellor Olaf Scholz of the SPD emphasized the importance of implementing the G7 decision on financial aid quickly to ensure that Ukraine receives the weapons it urgently needs. He also applauded the continued willingness of EU countries to accept Ukrainian refugees.
