Hungary Ends Blockade on EU Financial Support for Ukraine
Hungary has officially lifted its extended blockade on the proposed billion-euro EU support package for Ukraine. The government led by outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has given its approval in Brussels, paving the way for a significant loan of up to 90 billion euros aimed at aiding Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict. This pivotal decision was communicated by the Cypriot EU Council Presidency, highlighting Hungary's ambassador's agreement to the loan terms.
As part of the EU's commitment to assist Ukraine, this financial package aims to bolster the nation's ability to defend itself against Russian aggression and meet other essential state obligations. Notably, 60 billion euros from the new financial assistance is specifically designated for defense-related expenditures, underscoring the EU's focus on enhancing Ukraine's military capabilities during these challenging times.
The arrangement is set to proceed unless any EU member state raises an objection by Thursday afternoon. If the timeline holds without opposition, this financial injection will represent a critical step in supporting Ukraine both in its defense efforts and broader state governance amid the ongoing crisis.
