Increase in Health Care Premiums for Muface Officials: What You Need to Know

Pilar Alegría, the Government spokesperson, has revealed plans to initiate a new tender by the end of the year for health care coverage for officials enrolled in Muface. This announcement comes following a prior tender that was left unawarded last November due to insurers deeming the proposed increase of 1,711 euros over two years inadequate to meet their costs. As a result, the new agreement will see an overall increase of 957 million euros, raising the total financial commitment for the project to 4.478 billion euros, which is expected to last until 2027.

The new terms indicate a significant adjustment in premium payments. Over the next three years, officials can expect a structured increase, with specific increments of 1,937 euros in 2025, 725 euros in 2026, and 432 euros in 2027. This revised structure will culminate in a total increase of 335 euros over the entire period. Consequently, the average premium paid per mutualist annually will rise from the current 1,032 euros to an estimated 1,262 euros by 2027.

In a notable shift from previous calculations, the new premium structure will transition from a linear system to an incremental system based on age demographics. This change ensures that older populations will pay higher premiums than younger counterparts, which aims to align costs more closely with the risk associated with different age groups.

Alegría emphasized a message of reassurance to all mutualists, confirming that they will continue to enjoy guaranteed health care services under the current conditions. The new framework is set to cover approximately 15 million individuals, including both holders and their respective beneficiaries. A majority of the holders, about 65%, are educators across various levels of primary, secondary, and higher education, while 17% belong to specific departments of the General State Administration.

This restructured tender and adjusted premium payment scheme reflect the government's commitment to ensure sustainable and reliable health care coverage for its officials. The hopes are that these changes will adequately address the previous concerns of insurers while providing peace of mind to those who rely on Muface for their healthcare needs.
