Innovative Sustainability in the Paper Industry: The Partnership Between KTH and APRIL Group

The collaboration between KTH (Royal Institute of Technology) in Stockholm and APRIL Group, one of the world's largest manufacturers of pulp and paper based in Indonesia, has flourished for over 20 years. The partnership, which is part of the Royal Golden Eagle (RGE) corporate group, aims to foster advanced education and innovative practices in sustainable forestry.

APRIL Group operates extensive pulp and paper mills on the island of Sumatra, producing about 35 million tons of pulp and over one million tons of paper annually. Recently, the company has also ventured into producing paper cartons to meet the growing global demand for sustainable packaging. Under the leadership of Mikael Lindström, a professor of pulp technology at KTH, this partnership has evolved into a mutually beneficial exchange of ideas and talent.

One remarkable aspect of this collaboration is the opportunity for APRIL Group employees to pursue master's degrees at KTH, specializing in paper and pulp technology. Lindström emphasizes that this exchange has tremendously benefited students, who often return to Indonesia enriched by their academic pursuit and enhanced professional perspectives. According to Lindström, employees from APRIL are incredibly ambitious and dedicated, making the exchange a notable enhancement for KTH students.

Eduward Ginting, who was the first student from APRIL to graduate from KTH 16 years ago, reflects on his time in Sweden as among the best years of his life. He believes that the high academic standards and close collaboration with the Swedish forestry industry had a significant impact on his career trajectory, ultimately leading him to become the Chief Operating Officer of APRIL Group, overseeing over 8,000 employees.

Widi Suganda, another APRIL talent, recently completed his master's in macromolecular materials at KTH. His experience at KTH afforded him invaluable connections and practical insights into sustainability and the circular economy. He emphasizes the significance of Sweden's advanced approach to replacing fossil-based materials with bio-based solutions, aligning closely with APRIL Group’s objectives.

The focus on sustainability is reflected in APRIL's operational strategies. The company implements best available technologies to minimize emissions and environmental impact while ensuring profitability. This profitable business model enables APRIL to invest in sustainable initiatives and attract skilled employees dedicated to environmental stewardship.

For Ginting and Suganda, the Swedish work culture has left a lasting impression, particularly its emphasis on direct communication, collective decision-making, and balance. They have integrated these values into their operations in Sumatra, furthering the company's commitment to sustainability.

APRIL Group’s sustainable practices include innovative replanting methods that protect ecologically valuable forests and reduce illegal logging, alongside utilizing technology like drones for monitoring and managing their forestry operations.

As APRIL Group continues to expand its footprint in the global market, its partnership with KTH stands as a testament to the power of international cooperation in promoting sustainable practices within the forestry and paper industries, thereby encouraging a circular economy that benefits local communities and the environment alike.
