Intensifying Conflict: Ukraine Strikes Back Amid Ongoing Russian Attacks

Ukraine has initiated a large-scale long-range drone attack targeting several regions in Russia, including the significant Ryazan oil refinery. This measure follows several days of extensive strikes by Moscow against Ukraine. On Friday, Ukraine's counteroffensive came after three days marked by relentless drone and missile assaults on various Ukrainian locations, including the capital city of Kyiv. A recent cruise missile strike on an apartment block in Kyiv led to the tragic deaths of 24 individuals, including three children. As emergency teams completed their painstaking efforts to dig through the rubble of a nine-storey residential building, the Ukrainian air force labeled the assault as Russia's most considerable barrage since its all-out invasion began in February 2022. In response to these devastating attacks, Ukraine declared a national day of mourning. In an ongoing summit in Moldova, the Council of Europe is moving forward with plans to establish a war crimes tribunal to hold Russia's leadership accountable for their aggression against Ukraine. Alain Berset, the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, emphasized the need for immediate action to ensure the tribunal’s functioning and financial backing. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the site of the devastated apartment building in Kyiv's Darnytskyi district, laying flowers and speaking to rescue workers. In a message on the Telegram app, he expressed gratitude to the first responders who worked tirelessly for more than 24 hours, stating, 'The Russians practically leveled an entire section of the building with their missile.' Zelenskyy noted that preliminary assessments indicated that the weapon used was a recently manufactured Russian Kh-101 missile. During the week, Russian forces reportedly unleashed over 1,500 drones and numerous missiles in attacks across Ukraine. Zelenskyy has called for heightened pressure on Russia to ensure accountability, saying, 'A Russia like this can never be normalized, a Russia that deliberately destroys lives and hopes to remain unpunished.' He continued to appeal to international allies for support in bolstering Ukraine's air defense systems. In a troubling counter-response, Russian authorities reported that four individuals, including a child, were injured as a result of the Ukrainian strikes. The Investigative Committee of Russia has launched a terrorism investigation regarding the incidents, alleging that the Ukrainian forces targeted residential areas and civilian infrastructure. Two additional residential buildings and an industrial facility were reported to have sustained damage. Witnesses described seeing large blazes engulf the Ryazan oil refinery, suggesting it was the aim of the drone strikes launched by Ukraine. The city authorities in Kyiv announced a day of mourning with national flags flown at half-mast in honor of the victims of the missile strike. Major entertainment events were canceled or postponed in a show of respect for those who lost their lives. The interior ministry reported that search-and-rescue operations at the apartment building lasted over 28 hours. Hundreds of rescuers worked through approximately 3,000 cubic meters of rubble, and while 24 bodies were recovered, around 30 people miraculously escaped alive. Nearly 50 individuals sustained injuries, and about 400 required psychological support amidst the aftermath of the tragedy. As the conflict continues to escalate, both nations are caught in a cycle of violence that has left devastation in its wake and raised serious questions about the targeting of civilians in wartime.
