Interior Ministry Clarifies Arrest Efforts for Carles Puigdemont
The Ministry of the Interior has issued a detailed report to Supreme Court Judge Pablo Llarena regarding the attempts to apprehend former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont. The document highlights that the Catalan police force, Mossos d'Esquadra, did not seek assistance from the National Police or the Civil Guard during their operations to detain Puigdemont. The report emphasizes the competence and capability of the Mossos as the primary law enforcement agency in Catalonia.
According to the Ministry, the Mossos informed them of the specific strategies put in place to arrest Puigdemont during his recent re-entry into Barcelona, where he delivered a speech before evading capture and fleeing the country once more. In their statement, the Ministry led by Fernando Grande-Marlaska made it clear that while they offered operational support to the Catalan police, such assistance was not requested beyond the standard operating procedures that usually involve coordination and intelligence sharing.
The Ministry asserts that capturing Puigdemont remains a top priority. However, it also pointed out that neither the Police nor the Civil Guard successfully detected the presence of the fugitive during their border control operations with France, nor at airports or ports up to the present time.
