International Banks Eyeing German Market for Current Account Services
International credit institutions like JP Morgan and BBVA are making plans to offer current accounts in Germany, despite the stiff competition posed by local institutions like savings banks and cooperative banks. Two-thirds of Germans currently hold an account with these powerful local banks, but experts believe that there is still room for international players in the market. Ulrich Hoyer from banking consultancy Zeb sees the move as a strategic opportunity to tap into the largest market in Europe. The entry of foreign banks, along with the domestic neobroker Trade Republic, is expected to bring more competition and potentially lower fees for customers. Ania Scholz from FMH Financial Advisory anticipates that the upcoming offerings will be very affordable, with some even being offered for free or at a reduced cost compared to existing options. This development could benefit customers by providing them with more choices and competitive pricing in the current account sector.
