Investigation Launched into Bomb Attack on Journalist Sigfrido Ranucci: Friend and Businessman Suspected
Italian prosecutors have initiated an investigation into Valter Lavitola, a businessman and former journalist, for allegedly orchestrating a bomb attack at the residence of Sigfrido Ranucci, a well-known investigative reporter. Lavitola, who has a personal friendship with Ranucci—host of the investigative program 'Report' aired by the state broadcaster Rai—is being scrutinized under charges of attempting mass murder.
This shocking development follows the recent arrests of four individuals associated with Lavitola, suspected of executing the bomb attack that occurred last October. A rudimentary but powerful explosive device was detonated outside Ranucci's home, just outside Rome, causing significant damage to two vehicles belonging to him and his daughter. Fortunately, there were no injuries resulting from the blast, which happened shortly after Ranucci returned home late at night. For years, Ranucci had been under police protection due to previous threats against him.
Ranucci expressed disbelief in response to Lavitola’s alleged role, describing him as a close friend with whom he had nearly daily communication. "I was very surprised by this turn of events in the investigation," Ranucci told Corriere della Sera. Police are still trying to determine the motive behind such a violent act. However, evidence suggests that Lavitola purportedly directed someone to identify and pay individuals to carry out the bombing, with payments reported to be several thousand euros.
The two men became acquainted in 2019 after Ranucci conducted an investigative piece about Lavitola, who has had a controversial past, including legal troubles leading to a conviction for extortion involving former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Ranucci stated he never concealed his friendship with Lavitola, who currently owns a restaurant in Rome frequented by the reporter. Their last conversation reportedly took place while police were searching Lavitola’s home.
Following the bombing, Ranucci has received numerous threats, complicating efforts to identify those responsible. The traumatic event marked a concerning escalation in the threats he has faced, particularly as it took place directly outside his residence. Additionally, bullets were found near his home in 2024, raising further alarms about his safety.
Ranucci’s work for Report has focused extensively on issues of crime and corruption, often involving high-profile targets including government ministers. In an environment where he is a vocal critic of alleged political interference in Rai by Italy’s far-right government led by Giorgia Meloni, Ranucci remains undeterred. He has authored books on the Italian mafia, and in 2021, disclosed that he had been warned of a murder contract against him by mobsters, which was ultimately thwarted.
As the investigation unfolds, the implications for press freedom and the dangers facing journalists in Italy come into sharper focus, leaving many to question the safety of those who dare to hold power accountable.
