Investigation Unfolds After Gruesome Discovery of Woman's Body in Cartaya
Security forces are currently searching for the ex-partner of Rocío, a 55-year-old woman found dead in her home in Cartaya, Huelva, on Thursday. According to Manuel Barroso, the mayor of Cartaya, the suspect lived with Rocío, although their relationship was not romantic at the time, as he was acting as her caretaker.
The Government delegate in Andalusia, Pedro Fernández, has confirmed that Rocío was registered in the Viogen system, which monitors victims of gender-based violence. The individual who discovered her body, another former partner, had not seen her for 15 days but was completing work on her house that morning. He arrived to accompany her to a pending appointment but opted to enter through a balcony after she did not respond to his calls. It was then that he found her in her bed.
Security cameras, which Rocío had installed due to a tragic incident involving her son in the same home, are now being reviewed. Tragically, her son had previously died in the house along with another individual, following an incident in which their car was burned.
Mayor Barroso reported that a neighbor witnessed a figure covered in blankets leaving the scene, potentially hiding their face. Rocío and her family were long-time residents of Cartaya, and she was employed at a territorial delegation of the Junta de Andalucía.
As the investigation unfolds, all hypotheses remain open. The Government delegate emphasized that detectives are interrogating individuals who were with Rocío until late the previous night and are conducting thorough reviews of the surrounding area and the crime scene. While authorities are not ruling out the possibility of gender violence, they are also exploring a variety of motives and potential criminal acts.
In a somber act of remembrance, the town will observe a minute of silence at 12:00 PM at the Town Hall in memory of Rocío, and a day of mourning will be declared with flags at half-mast.
