Investigations Underway as Exploding Pagers Linked to Hezbollah Rock Lebanon

In a shocking turn of events, a wave of explosions from pagers in Lebanon has left at least 37 people dead and over 2,900 injured. Reports indicate that a payment of approximately 16 million euros, or 12 million Danish kroner, was allegedly made for these devices, which were used by members of the militant Shia movement Hezbollah prior to the explosions. The Bulgarian TV station bTV, referenced by Reuters, suggests that this substantial sum was transferred via Bulgaria before ultimately being moved to Hungary.

While the cash traveled through Bulgaria, it remains unclear how or when the funds changed hands. Bulgarian authorities have yet to confirm these details. Additionally, Bulgaria’s national security service, known as SANS, has launched an investigation into a local company suspected of supplying the explosive pagers. The company, based in Sofia, may have played a role in the tragic events that unfolded.

According to Bulgarian officials, there is no documentation confirming that the communication equipment entered the EU legally through Bulgaria. This raises significant concerns about the procurement processes surrounding these devices. Reports suggest that customs officials did not register any of the items related to the incident. This inquiry has gained traction following claims made in a Hungarian news portal, which cited anonymous sources linking the Sofia-based company "Norta Global" to the importation and delivery of the pagers to Hezbollah. However, attempts to reach representatives from the company have been unsuccessful.

The alarming events began on Tuesday, with hundreds of electronic devices detonating across multiple locations in Lebanon. The Taiwanese brand Gold Apollo is said to manufacture the pagers; however, they maintain that the devices were made for Hungarian firm BAC Consulting. The owner of BAC Consulting has since denied any direct involvement beyond acting as an intermediary.

Amid these developments, Iran has leveled accusations against Israel, alleging that it was responsible for the explosions. As tensions mount, Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement in this situation.

The unfolding investigation is likely to reveal even more details about the obscure supply chain of these devices and the complex web of international dealings that may have contributed to this tragedy. As authorities continue their work, the situation in Lebanon remains tense, and questions continue to arise about regional security and the implications of such attacks.
