Iran Protests Erupt Again Amidst Heavy Crackdown on Freedom of Expression
On Friday the thirteenth, widespread protests erupted across Iran amid a backdrop of renewed discontent with the regime of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Amidst the ongoing turmoil, access to free press has been significantly restricted, with authorities blocking internet access in an attempt to stifle communication among protesters and limit the dissemination of violent suppression footage. Despite these draconian measures, several videos have surfaced online, depicting mass marches rallying against Khamenei's government, with participants vocally denouncing the regime.
In the capital, Tehran, verified footage shows citizens expressing their outrage, while other videos from cities like Qazvin reveal demonstrators chanting slogans such as "death to the dictator"—an explicit reference to Khamenei—and "Long live the Shah," indicating support for Reza Pahlavi, the exiled heir to the last dynasty that ruled Iran before the 1979 revolution. These pro-monarchist sentiments suggest a growing disillusionment with the current regime, as protesters consider alternatives to the Islamic Republic.
According to the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRAI), an NGO comprised of Iranian activists based in the United States, the demonstrations have expanded to 46 cities across 21 provinces, primarily in the northwest region. The scale of these protests is illustrated in maps produced by HRAI, documenting the various locations where unrest has been reported.
As expected, the government's response has been brutal, with security forces engaging in violence and mass arrests. HRAI reports indicate that nearly 2,300 individuals have been detained over the past twelve days, many of whom are young and within the diverse crowd participating in the protests. Disturbingly, some protests have resulted in injuries that led participants to seek medical treatment, only to be confronted by security forces who raid hospitals, shooting tear gas and arresting patients and medical staff. Recent aggressions have been reported in hospitals located in Ilam and Tehran, furthering concerns over the government’s heavy-handed tactics.
The toll on human life has also been significant, with at least 42 individuals reported dead as a direct result of clashes, including eight members of the security forces. Footage from Alborz province shows victims lying on the ground, raising grave concerns about the violence being inflicted on protesters. Clashes have also intensified in various cities, with videos capturing intense confrontations between demonstrators and security personnel, including protesters setting vehicles ablaze.
Adding to the discord, workers are participating in strikes and many shops remain closed in several cities, signaling widespread dissatisfaction with the status quo. So far, the only public remarks from Khamenei have been condemnatory towards protesters, dismissing them as "rioters" who need to be subdued. Meanwhile, international leaders, such as US President Donald Trump, have issued warnings to Iran, stating that the United States could take severe action if the violence continues.
As these protests intensify, the world watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution but fearing escalating violence against those bravely standing up for their rights.
